The Great American Beer Fest is considered the largest and, by many, the best beer festival in the United States. The 2010 event is a three day extravaganza starting Thursday, September 16 and running through Saturday, September 18. It features an estimated 462 U. S. Breweries and the opportunity to taste approximately 2,200 different beers in one ounce tastings. It is a trip every beer lover should make at some point in their lives.
But, if you, like me, can’t get to Denver, there is a very nice festival in our own backyard. Each year, the Toledo Zoo hosts the Zoo Brew Fest. This year, it takes place on Friday, September 17. The festival takes place at the Nairobi Pavilion from 7 pm to 11 pm. The cost of the event is $35 for zoo members and $40 for non-members.
The event features 7 breweries, 4 of whom will also be at the Great American Beer Festival, and at least 29 different beers. Your entrance fee allows you to taste 15 beers in 4 ounce pours. So, if you think about it that is like tasting 60 beers at that other festival!
The participating breweries are:
Boston Beer Company- The maker of Samuel Adams will be featuring their Octoberfest and Cherry Wheat as well as a few others. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in Samuel Adams’ Beer Lovers’ Choice where you vote for what should be the newest addition to their beer family.
Great Lakes Brewing Company- Located in Cleveland, they will be bringing Commodore Perry IPA and their highly acclaimed Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, in addition to several others from their great beer lineup.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company- Sierra Nevada is one of the pioneers in the American craft beer scene. Look for their samplings that will include their fall seasonal, Autumn Tumbler, and Kellerweis, a hefeweisen made utilizing the age old Bavarian technique of open fermentation.
Smuttynose Brewing Company- This New England brewery will be showcasing several beers including their award winning Robust Porter, Smuttynose IPA, and Star Island Single, a Belgian abbey style ale.
Brooklyn Brewery- Look for their flagship beer, Brooklyn lager, as well as their Octoberfest and Post Road, the only Pumpkin Ale being offered at the Zoo Brew Fest.
Victory Brewing Company- This fantastic brewery hails for the state of Pennsylvania. They will be sharing their Victory Hopdevil. This IPA was recently declared one of the 8 best beers in America by a notable national publication. But don’t hesitate to try their other beers. Golden Monkey is considered a top-notch Belgian Tripel and Prima Pils is routinely ranked as THE best German-style pilsner available.
Maumee Bay Brewing Company- What would a Toledo Zoo Brew Fest be without the only microbrewery in NW Ohio? They will, of course, have their flagship beer on hand- Buckeye Beer. But be sure to try out one of their five other offerings including their popular Hazelnut Porter and their wonderful example of a Double IPA, Amarillo Brillo.
In addition to these great beers, there will be appetizers to snack on and music to entertain. Celebrate the great American beer the Toledo way at the Toledo Zoo Brew Fest! Ticket information is below:
