Bristol Palin on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ – ‘I don’t have a sexy bone in my body’ — As one of the youngest contestants on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars premiering on ABC tomorrow night, Bristol Palin, 19, might be thought to be one of the competitors with the most amount of energy to burn to take on the first dance — the cha-cha. The daughter of former Alaskan governor, Sarah Palin, however, tells USA Today that she does not have a performing background and finds the quick but sensual dance challenging to conquer.
“It’s all about being sexy and interacting with your partner,” she said. “I don’t have a sexy bone in my body.”
In taking on the high-profile challenge with no prior performance background on which to draw, Ms. Palin admitted, “I’m starting from scratch.”
Ms. Palin became nationally known when her mother, Sarah Palin, accepted Senator John McCain’s (R-AZ) request to be his running mate in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. When it was later revealed that Bristol was pregnant by her teenaged boyfriend, Levi Johnston and was unmarried, questions arose from the candidate’s opponents surrounding Sarah Palin’s advocacy of abstinence for teens. Both Ms. Palin and Mr. Johnston appeared on stage with Sarah Palin and the rest of her family at the Republican National Convention of 2008.
Since the loss of the election, Bristol’s engagement with Mr. Johnston has been on-again, off-again (off again as of July, 2010); their child, Tripp, was born in December, 2008; and Bristol has been out on the lecture circuit, speaking about the difficulties of being an unwed, teenaged mother and advocating abstinence for teens. She made one guest appearance as herself on ABC’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager and has stopped her college studies for the time being in order to earn money to support herself and her son. According to ABC News, Ms. Palin asks $15,000 – $30,000 per appearance at organized speaking events. The single mother will turn 20 years old in October, 2010.
Monday night Bristol Palin will dance the cha-cha live in front of America from the Dancing with the Stars stage. According to E! Online, Sarah Palin is expected to be in the studio audience to support her daughter’s debut performance.
Bristol Palin’s professional partner is Mark Ballas who has won the DWTS championship twice, both times with Olympic gold-medalist athletes. His first winning partner was figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi in Season 6, 2008, and his second win was with gymnast, Shawn Johnson, who at 17 remains the youngest winner on the show to date. Mr. Ballas and Ms. Johnson won the contest in Season 8, 2009. There are currently two television seasons of DWTS on ABC per calendar year.
Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars begins Monday on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern.
