What is the best World of Warcraft DPS (damage per second) class to use? This question is asked frequently when choosing a character, especially when just starting out. This question is a lot harder to answer then if you were going to try and pick a tanking or healing class, because the options are much greater. Every class in WoW is able to damage, which gives you the options of choosing a class that can also heal or tank, or even both. Being that there is no “best” DPS class in the game, you have to ask yourself some questions that will lead you to know which class you’re going to play to your full potential.
Blizzard tries to keep all the classes as close together as possible as far as class peaks in damage. The amount of damage that is done by that class remains solely on the player, and the gear that he obtains. This being said, you have to ask yourself first which type of class you would rather play. Do you want to do ranged or melee DPS? Once you cut this down, your options become a lot clearer.
Ranged DPS: Mages, Druids, Warlocks, Shamans, Priests and Hunters
Melee DPS: Rogues, Druids, Warriors, Paladins, Death Knight and Shamans
Now you may see some of the classes on both lists, and that’s because you have an option of which type of DPS you would rather do by changing your in-game talents. Once you’ve decided on which type of class you would rather play; now you have to decide whether you want a class that can also be a healer and/or tank. Doing so will once again cut down your list. Once you’ve don’t that, its time to try them all out. Level each class to about 10-20 levels and get a feel for their spells and abilities. Most WoW players have played almost every class at least once.
Being that you know there is no ‘best” WoW DPS class, there still seems to be some classes that top the lists in every raid. This could be because there gear surpasses the rest of the raid, or just because the players have an easier time playing those classes, but either way I’ll give you a breakdown of the top DPS I see in raids. Be aware that this is not always true depending on the type of players I raid with, and a lot of the information can jump one or two spots up or down. Also keep in mind that this information changes almost every time Blizzard releases a new patch. I will keep you posted whenever I see a new change in my list.
1. Mages and Rogues
5. Death Knights
Don’t get me wrong,I have seen some classes in the lower numbers pull off top DPS but that’s usually because the other classes are playing to there full potential (because of the players) or because the gear differential was to overwhelming. Either way, you have a lot of aspects to keep in mind, and raids always need different things to help them make it through tough bosses.
