This is the third article in a series reviewing various fitness classes around Des Moines. For each review I provide information on the facility, instructor(s) and ratings including how many calories I burned and how tough I thought it was. Finally, I’ll include information on how to join each class or facility if possible.
I attended the Tuesday night BodyAttack class at Gold’s Gym, taught by Courtney and another instructor who was in training. The class was one of the more full classes I had seen at Gold’s, and I brought a new client along too, who looked at me nervously as our instructor told us, “Body Attack is a 55 minute attack on your entire body – it’s an endurance challenge!” She was not kidding. The basic format of Body Attack includes a warm-up, several general cardio tracks, a “recovery” track with push-ups (chest and tricep) and then back for more leg burning cardio all the way to the end. The “cool-down” is actually one last cardio track filled with optional plyometrics (jump knees and squat jumps). Finally, you get to end the class with a short core section and a stretch.
The movements of Attack are athletic in nature. No fancy choreography, and there are lots of options for those who want an easier or lower impact workout. Our instructor was great at pointing out options and reminding us that you could do the entire class without jumping if that’s what you wanted. The class had a wide variety of athletic abilities from running enthusiasts to beginning participants. Every single person got a great workout, and I assure you there is no way to get through the entire class without being covered in sweat. Cardio addicts rejoice – this is truly a class designed for you! You can jump, jack, squat, run, high knee and jog in place until you fall over dead, but thanks to great instructors and catchy music you might even enjoy yourself.
The bottom line is Body Attack is not for the faint of heart. Beginners may want to lay down a good foundation of cardio before tackling this challenge. You will get a great workout, and you will burn an insane number of calories, and done once or twice a week it makes an excellent good, hard, sweat fest cardio workout.
