Republican Lou Barletta, candidate in Pennsylvani’s 11th Congressional district issued the following press release. Democratic incumbent Paul Kanjorski issued a response to the Examiner.
Barletta Press Release
Kanjorski must answer for huge jumps in poverty, foreclosures. 26-year incumbent’s failed policies destroyed jobs.
Lou Barletta, candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 11th District, today called on Congressman Paul Kanjorski to take responsibility for the huge increase in the national poverty rate and the huge increase in the local foreclosure rate – especially since Kanjorski one week ago said “we are now out of the woods” economically.
Just one day later, a report said home foreclosures in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazleton region “catapulted” up by 74 percent. “Unemployment in the metro area hit 10.4 percent in July, the third straight month it was the highest among the state’s 14 metro areas. … Wilkes-Barre/Scranton/Hazleton unemployment reached an 18-year high in July, and it has risen 1.6 percentage points over the last year.” (Citizens’ Voice, 9/10/10)
Thursday, it was announced that the national poverty rate is 14.3 percent – the highest rate ever recorded. The Office of Management and Budget defines the poverty threshold level as less than $21,954 for a family of four in 2009.
“The national poverty rate is at a record high, the local unemployment rate is at an 18-year high, and more people are losing their homes this year than last year – and Paul Kanjorski has to answer for that. Congressman Kanjorski’s failed economic policies, his vote for the government takeover of the healthcare system, and his vote for the destructive energy tax known as cap and trade have cost us thousands of jobs, and we’re seeing the results of his actions with these new statistics,” Lou Barletta said.
“What’s worse, Congressman Kanjorski said ‘we are now out of the woods,’ which shows how incredibly out of touch he is with the economic realities facing his constituents. Congressman Kanjorski needs to stop hiding, hold town hall meetings and debates, and explain to the people how he failed to protect them from this economic collapse,” Barletta added.
Kanjorski spokesperson Ed Mitchell issued the following response:
The reason the unemployment rate is so high is that it is driven upward by the rate in Hazleton. That city’s rate is 25-30% higher than anywhere else in the district. That affects the overall rate.
Poverty is where it is because of 8 years of George W. Bush and
the preceding 12 years of Republican Congresses that cut food subsidies, food stamps, food banks, school lunch programs, etc.
Now Barletta wants to join his GOP buddies and pick up where they left off after Bush.
Paul Kanjorski has been working to remedy this mess.
Barletta is seeking to oust Kanjorski, who is seeking election to a fourteenth term in Congress from Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional district. The 11th contains all of Carbon, Columbia, and Monroe Counties. It also encompasses parts of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties, including the cities of Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton.
