As many readers will recall I wrote an article earlier in the week regarding the Antelope Valley Allied Arts Association. Readers that do not closely follow the art world in the Antelope Valley may be unaware of the battle going on in the community over the AVAAA. As I have stated before, the AVAAA was created in 1947 here in the Antelope Valley to enhance the artistic community. It has been a force in the community for many years and has fought many battles with the City in order to maintain the Cedar Centre Hall which has been closed and sold many times over the years, and even threatened to be torn down.
Earlier this year the AVAAA and the City of Lancaster came head to head in a battle for the Cedar Centre Hall over an issue of legitimacy. In October of 2009 a notice was sent to the Association which stated that the City of Lancaster has accepted the resignation of several AVAAA board members. This document also stated that the “vacancies” of these Board members seats would be filled by a new board. This left the AVAAA with two separate Boards, each claiming to be the legitimate board.
At the urging of the City of Lancaster the two Boards have been told to work together. However in the months since the City Council meeting the City of Lancaster has recognized the new Board as the legitimate Board and elections have been held. The new Board is currently headed by President Michelle Navarrete. While the new Board has continued to hold elections and push their agenda the old board has as well. Both Boards held elections in the past week and both boards are continuing to hold events and functions, the new board at the Cedar Centre Hall and the old board at various businesses around town. The ousted AVAAA board’s election results include: President Jeffrey Moffatt, 1st Vice president OPEN, 2nd Vice President Tonia Thompson, 3rd Vice president Ulrica bell, Recording Secretary Tracee Estabrooke, Corresponding Secretary OPEN, Treasurer Star Moffatt. Parliamentarian Steve Ponting, and Trustees Evie Cook and Linda Reynolds.
In the interest of continuing as a neutral observer in this ongoing battle I will continue to provide information on both boards and their events. For those readers that are interested in following the elections and membership of the boards please contact the separate boards, for the Cedar Centre Hall please call 661-726-0655. For information about the other AVAAA board please check in with their Facebook page AVAAA.
