It’s Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento, and you need to find a shillelagh fast. Where can you turn, and just what the heck does a shillelagh have in common with animal lovers?
Why, Decades Costumes has them both in stock, of course.
Located on historic Del Paso Blvd, Decades has been helping theater companies, event participants and party-goers for almost 25 years. Owner James Hall scours the West Coast for vintage clothing, accessories and props to handle even the most unusual costume requests.
For the record, a shillelagh is a knotty wooden club or walking stick of Irish origin. The man searching for one last Wednesday found what he needed at Decades.
Now Hall, a long-time animal lover, is helping to outfit volunteers and guests for “The Great Catsby” fundraiser taking place on Saturday October 2nd.
The 1920’s-themed event will be a grand outdoor party to benefit Cats about Town Society (C.A.T.S.) and Helen’s Animal Rescue Team (HART). For more information about the event, click here.
Decades carries a wide variety of 20’s gear, including vintage flapper and gangster outfits, garden party dresses, zoot suits, hats and jewelry. James Hall and employee Felicia Cowley have been assisting Catsby-goers in achieving the exact style they want for the event.
Cowley, a talented designer in her own right, also models outfits to help customers make decisions.
Hall ends up spending much of his time getting costumes repaired, cleaned, steamed, dry-cleaned and ironed between uses. Cowley and her fellow employee Jon Johnson are also often involved in designing and repairs; on the Wednesday in question Johnson was busy affixing rhinestones to an Elvis jumpsuit.
Decades carries many amazing feathered masks that Jon Johnson has created; he says that he has made hundreds over the years and that no two are the same.
James Hall worked with antiques and vintage clothing before opening Decades, but his talents are not limited to authentic, traditional costumes.
Want to go out dressed as a Roman centurion, a cartoon character, the Pope, the King of Hearts, Martha Washington or the “Soup Nazi” of Seinfeld fame? No problem – Decades has you covered.
In additional to having high quality, fun and hard-to-find styles, Decades offers much better prices than typical costume shops. Most costumes (which may include hats, jewelry, shoes, wigs etc.) can be rented for $35.00 – $45.00, and can be kept for a five-day period.
Hall prides himself on having the best possible selection of clothing and accessories, although he says somewhat wistfully that he has “only one pair of stilts”.
So unless your party plans require multiple sets of stilts, Decades Costumes can get you ready for anything.
