Even as colder weather approaches, there are still a plethora of activities going on outside. As you soak up the remaining outdoor fun before winter arrives, remember to visit the Akron Zoo and their latest Conservation Carousel. The Akron Zoo is open 361 days a year, so you have plenty of time to check out the animas and ride the carousel – but why would you want to wait?
The Conservation Carousel, which opened July 31, features 33 hand-carved wooden animals and a chariot. Some animals are ones you can find right there in the zoo.
Carousel Works, in Mansfield, OH, designed and hand-carved the animals. The carousel area also includes picnic areas and benches for guests to relax.
But the carousel was created to do more than just entertain visitors with a 2 ½ minute ride. It is designed to further educate guests about the animals and their native habitats. The carousel also features graphics and a map showing where the animals live in the wild. An attempt was made to represent all seven continents, and creature large and small. Riders can find everything from a giraffe and polar bear to a lady bug and poison dart frog.
Furthermore, officials designed and constructed the carousel with the planet in mind. The zoo’s horticulture staff rescued and reused different plants, grasses, trees and shrubs from the area. Brush and logs were transferred into mulch around the zoo instead of being dumped in a landfill. All of the concrete was recycled, and most was reused on site.
Three hundred and fifty LED bulbs light the carousel at a rate 80% more efficient than other bulbs. The carousel animals were made from sustainably harvested basswood. Finishes used are 100% water based. In addition, many of the materials used are from local sources.
After riding the carousel, surrounded by the sights of wild animals and the sounds of carousel music, you will surely be inspired to learn more about the wild creatures we share this earth with.
Admission to the zoo is $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $6 for children 2-14. Parking is $2 and a carousel ride is $2. The Akron Zoo is open year round from 10am – 5pm. For more information, visit www.akronzoo.org.
