A few weeks ago, a University of Chicago law professor blogged that if the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire he would have to cut back. And cutting back could mean getting rid of the gardening service or even the maid service. True to form, liberals blasted Todd Henderson, the law professor whose tax lament made him a human pinata for crazed liberals. Letters and comments to the Chicago Tribune, following an article they did on the law professor, were full of invective toward Henderson. But the hate didn’t end with Henderson, the Lefties also went after his gardener and maid.
Now many gardeners and maids are not rich people. They tend to be middle class or even lower middle class. They are regular people who work hard every day for the money they get. Of course, in the world of most Lefties, working hard to make a buck is something to scowl at, to hiss at, to hate. Now, you are probably asking why would the Lefties hate the gardener and the maid?
Well, many of the comments attacking the fairly wealthy Todd Henderson, university law professor, called for him to fire the maid and to fire the gardener. Lefties wanted Henderson to fire the maid and the gardener so Henderson could pay 39 percent in federal income taxes rather than the current 35 percent in federal income taxes. In fact, the Left wants folks like Henderson to pay even more than 39 percent on the federal level. They even want him to pay more in state taxes. And if it means he has to do without a maid and gardener, then so much the better because these Lefties don’t have a maid or gardener so Henderson shouldn’t either.
This reminds me of 1993 when President Clinton and the Democratic Congress passed a luxury tax. After the passage of the luxury tax, rich people stopped buying yachts and the yachting business went into recession. The blue collar workers who worked at the yacht manufacturers then lost their jobs because of cutbacks due to the decline in sales. Fast forward to 2010 and the Left wants higher taxes on the rich. The rich will cut back and then maids and gardeners start losing their jobs or clients.
Most folks understand that when you have less money you spend less. Because so many have lost their jobs, more people are not going out to dinner, going away for the weekend, buying a new car, remodeling a room, buying new appliances and so on. The only time when car sales went through the roof was during the Cash for Clunkers programs when they received tax incentives to buy a car. Appliance sales also spiked up when the government offered a tax rebate for buying more energy-efficient equipment.
So, a university professor who makes more than $250,000 a year says a tax increase could cause him to lay off his maid and gardener. The Left says, “Fire em!” So, then that maid and gardener have to file for unemployment, which will only pay a fraction of what they were making. They then also have to file for food stamps because their income dropped to unsustainable levels. They also have to file for Medicaid because they can no longer afford health insurance. So, now they are on unemployment, food stamps and Medicaid because the Left wanted them fired so their boss could pay more in taxes. Oh, and because they cannot afford their own maid and butler, the Left believes Todd Henderson shouldn’t have a maid and gardener either.
This helps explain how people lose jobs and economies sputter. While often more complicated than that, there is no doubt that when people lose jobs and have less money to spend, the economy suffers. But, as usual, the Left does not understand that. Either that, or the Left just prefers people to have less and depend on the government more in order to survive. My guess: it’s a combination of the two. The Left does not understand basic economics and they do want more government.
