Financier is one of a handful of French Patisseries that have sprung up around the city in the past few years. While many of these delicate pastries around come very dear (see La Bergamote for one example), Financier is the everyman’s patisserie, offering reasonably-priced top-quality French delights in an unpretentious setting.
Stop into any of Financier’s locations around town, and you’ll be overwhelmed by choice. The pastry case has a seemingly unending selection of pastries in every shape and flavor. Craving something fruity? Chocolatey? Coffee-flavored? Slathered in cream? Financier has an option for you.
One such selection that is sure to please is the classic Napoleon. It’s three layers of crisp, brittle puff pastry, darkly caramelized and deeply flavored, surrounding two thick layers of different types of pastry cream. The lower level is eggier and lighter; the top level is creamier and smooth. And in between is the surprise star of the show: a very thin layer of raspberry preserves atop the middle plank of puff pastry lends a tart bite that rounds out the creamy flavors.
If there’s a Financier near year, stop by for an afternoon pick-me-up with a cup of coffee or tea. You’ll feel thoroughly French on the way out.
