Last Tuesday, most of the Chrysler Group dealerships in the US and Canada attended the 2010 Dealer Announcement event in Orlando Florida. The event offered a ton of new information and teasers about 2011 model year vehicles, including an exclusive look at the 2012 Dodge Viper. I figured that it was only a matter of time until more, non-public information came out and yesterday, information on the 2011 Dodge Challenger was revealed by the folks at Ontario Street Car (OSC).
The 2011 Dodge Challenger will offer four trimlines – the base model Challenger, the Challenger Rallye, The Challenger R/T and finally the Challenger SRT – 392. The public information from the 2010 Dealership Announcement show mentioned the 2011 Challenger with two new trimlines and this document confirms that the 2011 Challenger SRT will be powered by the new 392 Hemi (6.4L) – offering 475 horsepower and 460lb-ft of torque. This is an improvement of 50 horsepower and 40lb-ft of torque over the 2011 Challenger SRT8 but as an extra bonus, the 2011 Challenger SRT models will feature Chrysler’s fuel saving Multiple Displacement System to help improve the fuel economy of the high-end Challenger.
During his speech at the 2010 Dealer Announcement Show, Dodge brand CEO Ralph Gilles reportedly stated that the 2011 Challenger SRT 392 would be capable of a 0-60 time in the 3 second range but with a curb weight of over 4100lbs, the 2011 SRT 392 would need to either cut some weight or offer more than 475 horsepower. OSC points out that the Cadillac CTS-V dashes from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and it has 81 more horsepower than the 2011 Challenger SRT 392, while only weighing about 60lbs more. It is safe to assume that the 2011 Challenger SRT 392 will offer more than the stated 475, considering both Gilles comment and the fact that it has been proven by multiple sources that the current Challenger SRT8’s 6.1L Hemi makes more than the claimed 425hp.
Along with the new 392 cubic inch Hemi, the 2011 Challenger SRT 392 will offer 1,100 limited edition inaugural SRT 392s in a choice of either blue with white stripes or white with blue stripes. These 1,100 special edition 2011 Challengers will include a serialized dash plaque, white leather seats with blue stripes proudly wearing the 392 logo, bright silver quad exhaust tips, and 392 Hemi badges. The 2011 Challenger SRT 392 also comes with all of the standard goodies from the 2011 SRT8 models, like the SRT-specific 20” wheels and tires, performance tuned suspension, brakes and suspension, an advanced audio system and a trip to the SRT Track Experience.
The base Challenger and 2011 R/Ts also receive a jump in horsepower, with the entry level Mopar muscle car picking up an additional 55hp and the R/T models equipped with a manual transmission jumping up to 379hp. The addition power across the board should allow the Challenger to compete more closely with the 2011 Camaro and Mustang, helping to heat up the current Detroit muscle car war.
