Its day one with the new Silverado 2500 4WD. This week we’ll take an in-depth look at the popular full-size pickup from Chevrolet.
This week we’ll test drive the 2011 2500 4WD LT Regular Cab pickup with the Vortec 6.0 liter V-8 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The exterior has the Sheer Silver metallic finish with a light Titanium/Ebony interior.
Chevy sells thousands of Silverado’s each year to its faithful customers in the Denver area. The Silverado may not have the bold styling of some other full-size pickups, but it still has an appeal as an American icon. With Denver being near a large farming, ranching, and hunting area, it’s been a popular truck here.
The Chevy Silverado has been around since 1975 when it was first introduced as a trim package. “Silverado” was a designation used to denote the higher level trim that appeared on Chevy C/K pickups from 1975 -1998. In1999, Silverado became an official name and replaced the time-honored and immensely-popular C/K Series trucks.
Early models included variations in the engine and equipment, with the introduction of different grilles and interior trim in the 1999 redesign. The Silverado then came with a “SS” (Super Sport) package with special SS badging and engine options, reflecting Chevrolet’s sportier styling.
Few pickups have surpassed the overall quality and reliability of the Chevy Silverado over the years, and it is the second best-selling light-duty pickup truck, right behind the Ford F-Series. The Silverado is a close cousin to the GMC Sierra.
Changes in the aerodynamics like the 57 degree angle of the windshield, contribute to fuel efficiency. GM says that the Silverado and GMC Sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and EPA highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon or better.
Built on what General Motors calls its GMT900 platform, the Silverado shares much of its foundation with the Chevy Tahoe. The Silverado gets a unique rear suspension and a frame that’s 245-percent stiffer than that of the SUV. This week we will spend one day on the mechanical features.
Buyers in the market for a full-size pickup know what it is and what they expect it to do.
The Silverado is available with an exceptional wide range of choices in size, engines, and capabilities. The Silverado 2500 4WD LT Regular Cab we’ll look at this week is only one of the many choices that are available.
Come back tomorrow when we get inside and take a look at the Silverado’s big cabin.
